Meralco is exploring a partnership with Albay Electric Cooperative, Inc. after local officials requested the company’s assistance in improving electricity distribution services in the province.
Senior vice‑president Arnel P. Casanova said Albay leaders asked Meralco to help address persistent power supply issues that are deterring businesses from investing in the region.
Aleco is a member‑owned cooperative that serves three cities and fifteen municipalities in Albay.
According to Casanova, the mayors encouraged Meralco to evaluate the province’s power distribution system and identify ways to enhance Aleco’s services.
Meralco, the country’s largest private electric distribution utility, supplies more than 8.2 million customers across Metro Manila and nearby provinces.
The initiative follows the rejection of Meralco’s unsolicited proposal to partner with South Cotabato II Electric Cooperative, which instead accepted a competing offer.
In response, Meralco urged the cooperative to conduct a competitive selection process to ensure transparency and fairness.
The company also plans to participate in the upcoming public bidding for a private sector partner of Batangas II Electric Cooperative after the board approved the process.
Meralco will await the finalized terms of reference before submitting its proposal.
