Chelsea completes signing of French star for next season

Chelsea completes signing of French star for next season

Chelsea are close to securing the services of 26‑year‑old French centre‑back Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace, with a transfer fee of roughly £52 million. The defender is scheduled to undergo a medical before finalising a six‑year contract that will run until June 2032.

The move forms part of a broader defensive overhaul, with the manager seeking a physically robust, Premier League‑proven defender. Lacroix’s pace, strength and ability to command large spaces fit the desired profile for the back line.

Crystal Palace had originally aimed for a higher valuation, but the agreed amount matches the payment made for Jan Paul van Hecke earlier in the transfer window. Chelsea’s willingness to meet the figure reflects the high regard for Lacroix’s attributes.

The signing could prompt changes within the squad, as several defenders may face uncertain futures. Axel Disasi, Benoît Badiashile and Trevoh Chalobah are among those whose roles could be reassessed.

Lacroix’s experience in England and Germany provides immediate readiness, eliminating the need for a lengthy adaptation period. His recovery speed and physicality are expected to support a higher defensive line and improve transition play.

The club already has young defenders with potential, but the priority is a reliable organiser for the back line. Managing squad depth will be critical to avoid congestion and maintain stability.
