Hamilton Man Arrested in 17-Year-Old Patrick Santos Cold Case

Hamilton Man Arrested in 17-Year-Old Patrick Santos Cold Case

At 10:30 a.m. on a warm summer Wednesday, police announced the arrest of Pierre O’Connor, charged with first‑degree murder in the September 17, 2006 torture killing of 21‑year‑old Patrick Santos.

The 21‑year‑old was found dead on the doorstep of his home on Bridlington Street, his head wrapped in plastic secured with duct tape and his hands and feet bound. Emergency personnel declared him deceased at the scene after he was discovered suffering from medical trauma.

Investigators responded to a 911 call that afternoon and recovered DNA evidence from the crime scene. The DNA matched O’Connor, who was later located in Hamilton, approximately 45 minutes from the site of the murder.

The case, which remained unsolved for more than a decade, was reopened by the city’s cold case unit. The unit had previously closed several long‑standing murders and identified numerous missing persons.

Patrick Santos’ family expressed relief at the arrest, noting that while it cannot bring their son back, it offers a measure of closure after years of uncertainty.

Cold case chief Detective Sergeant Steve Smith highlighted the unit’s commitment to bringing perpetrators to justice and to providing families with answers, stating that the unit’s work ultimately removes suspects from hiding.

O’Connor faces first‑degree murder charges; the case will proceed to court, where further evidence will be examined.
