Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear intensified his appeal to Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell on Saturday, urging the 84‑year‑old senator to disclose details of his undisclosed medical condition amid growing concerns about his capacity to serve.
In a social‑media post, Beshear linked his request to prior national discussions about health transparency, stating that he had previously pressed the former administration to address public worries about a former president’s health and now called on McConnell to provide a similar update.
The governor concluded by urging the senator to halt speculation and directly inform the public about his condition.
Beshear’s remarks follow a formal letter sent to McConnell on Wednesday, in which he asked for a comprehensive health report on behalf of constituents who are increasingly anxious about the senator’s wellbeing and ability to fulfill his Senate duties.
In the letter, Beshear emphasized that elected officials owe clear communication regarding their fitness to serve.
McConnell has been absent from Senate proceedings for three weeks after being hospitalized in early June for an undisclosed ailment. His office has not released specific details or a timeline for his return.
Leaked emergency‑dispatch audio from a June 14 call suggested he was found unconscious at his home and may have experienced a heart attack.
Following the hospitalization, McConnell’s wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, met with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng in Beijing, and her office stated that his condition did not require an immediate return to the United States.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso said they have spoken with McConnell at length about Senate business, recent Supreme Court decisions, and an ongoing campaign‑finance scandal.
When asked about McConnell’s health aboard Air Force One, the president said he had no information on the senator’s condition.
