UMVA has learned that a disturbing incident involving a Hawaiian monk seal in Hawaii has sparked outrage and renewed calls for respect towards the endangered animals.
A man, identified as Igor Mykhaylovych Lytvynchuk, 38, was arrested in Washington state after allegedly throwing a rock at the seal's head, narrowly missing its nose. The incident, which was captured on cellphone video, has drawn widespread condemnation from residents across Hawaii.
According to the criminal complaint, Lytvynchuk was seen tracking the movements of a Hawaiian monk seal, known as 'Lani,' as she playfully pushed a floating log close to the shoreline. He then allegedly picked up a large rock and threw it directly at Lani's head, startling her and causing her to rear up out of the water.
Witnesses confronted Lytvynchuk, who told them he was "rich enough to pay the fines" before walking away. The incident has left many in Hawaii shocked and concerned for the safety of these endangered animals.
Maui Mayor Richard Bissen responded to the video, stating, "Let me be clear, this is not the kind of visitor we welcome on Maui. We welcome respectful visitors that understand that our cultural environment and wildlife must be treated with care and aloha." He added, "Behaviour like this will not be tolerated."
The Hawaiian monk seal is one of the most endangered seal species in the world, with an estimated population of 1,600 in the wild. If convicted, Lytvynchuk faces up to one year in prison for each charge, along with significant fines.
