UMVA has learned that a confirmed case of measles may have exposed passengers to the highly contagious disease at Pearson airport earlier this month.
The possible exposure occurred on June 13 in Terminal One between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., specifically on Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET552 from Addis Ababa to Toronto and Air Canada flight AC410 from Toronto to Montreal.
Peel Public Health is urging anyone who was at these sites or thinks they have been exposed to measles to check their immunization record to confirm they and their family members are up to date with vaccinations.
Those born in or after 1970 are generally recommended to have two doses of the MMR or MMRV vaccine, while those born before 1970 are considered protected against measles.
If experiencing symptoms, individuals are advised to contact their health-care provider or local public health unit as soon as possible to get advice, and to inform their doctor that they may have been in contact with someone who has measles.
Measles symptoms begin 7-21 days after infection and may include high fever, cough, runny nose, red, watery eyes, sensitivity to light, and a red rash lasting four to seven days.
Peel Public Health is also offering support for those possibly affected, with a hotline available at 905-799-7700 or 1-888-919-7800 (toll-free) from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.
