The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is examining members of Vice-President Sara Duterte-Carpio's security group as part of its ongoing investigation into her alleged threats against President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr.
NBI Director Melvin A. Matibag testified before the Senate impeachment court on Wednesday that the security group is among the persons of interest being examined in the investigation.
Matibag stated that the NBI has included the security group in its investigation, but declined to identify the persons of interest, citing the sensitivity of the investigation.
The NBI is continuing to investigate the alleged assassination plot, which involves individuals who may have knowledge of, or links to, the plot.
Matibag emphasized that the threat against the President remains active, and that the NBI is working to identify the person who was contracted to carry out the assassination.
The NBI chief explained that investigators have considered Ms. Duterte's network of associates in assessing her capacity to carry out the alleged threat, and that they have identified a wide range of connections and a vast network.
The Senate impeachment court also ordered the issuance of subpoenas to two Land Bank of the Philippines branch managers, who are expected to testify when the trial resumes on July 29 for the presentation of evidence on the first article of impeachment.
Meanwhile, Manila Rep. Bienvenido M. Abante, Jr. criticized Ms. Duterte's overseas trip during the impeachment proceedings, saying it raises questions about her commitment to the constitutional process.
Abante questioned how the trip was being financed and said that even if Ms. Duterte is not using public funds, the people have the right to know where she is getting her travel expenses.
The NBI chief testified that the agency continues to coordinate with Malacañang to ensure the President's security while the investigation is underway.
Matibag added that investigators have already looked into the background of the persons of interest, but declined to disclose details, citing the sensitivity of the investigation.
The NBI is the prosecution's final witness for the fourth article of impeachment, which accuses Ms. Duterte of committing culpable violations of the Constitution and betrayal of public trust by allegedly threatening the President, the First Lady and Mr. Romualdez.
