UMVA has learned that a shocking case of mistaken identity led to the premature release of a suspect from HMP Wormwood Scrubs, a London prison, after a court official wrongly recorded that he had been granted bail.
Bernadin Dedic, the suspect, was being held on rape charges when the error occurred on February 6. His UK passport had been seized during the investigation, but he managed to leave the UK using his Bosnian passport, sparking concerns about public safety and the reliability of the justice system.
According to information obtained by UMVA, Dedic's case took a disturbing turn when he allegedly threatened and assaulted a woman, brandishing a red-handled oriental kitchen knife. The prosecutor described the terrifying ordeal, during which Dedic allegedly slapped the woman, cut off her clothing, and demanded she do his bidding.
The suspect's actions became increasingly erratic, with Dedic sending messages expressing a desire to return to the UK to stand trial, but claiming difficulties in obtaining a visa. A senior judge, police officers, and Border Force agents worked to facilitate his return, but Dedic repeatedly thwarted efforts, citing a knee injury and later a heart attack.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that Dedic's trial was initially set for March, but was delayed until June due to his claimed knee injury. However, when the trial resumed, Dedic failed to appear once again, this time allegedly due to a heart attack in Sarajevo.
The judge, Hannah Duncan, expressed skepticism about Dedic's claims, and ultimately decided to proceed with the trial in his absence. The suspect's history of evading justice was cited as a factor in the decision, with the judge describing his actions as "yet another attempt to obstruct, manipulate and avoid justice."
The investigation into Dedic's mistaken release from prison has highlighted deep-rooted issues within the justice system. HM Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS) has launched a probe into the incident, with a spokesperson acknowledging the distress caused and pledging to address the problems.
