UMVA has learned that Toronto Police have charged five individuals in connection with a demonstration in a mainly Jewish neighbourhood earlier this year, a move that underscores the city's commitment to combating hate crimes.
The accused, who allegedly attended the demonstration on March 15 with other pro-Palestinian protesters, are said to have displayed and distributed antisemitic signs, with some of them wearing disguises during the alleged offences. This brazen act sparked widespread concern and triggered a thorough investigation.
Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw emphasized that the force will continue to relentlessly follow the evidence to hold those who commit criminal acts accountable, no matter the time it takes. He highlighted that the charges can come at any time after an incident, serving as a warning to potential offenders.
The arrests were carried out on Sunday, following the execution of several search warrants in Toronto and Durham Region. The police alleged that the accused individuals promoted hatred, creating fear, anxiety, and division in their communities.
Demkiw stressed that hate has a real impact, and antisemitic behaviour like this can have far-reaching consequences. He commended the tireless work of the Counter-Terrorism Security Unit, which thoroughly investigated the incident, gathered evidence carefully, and pursued charges when there were reasonable grounds and legal authority to do so.
All five accused individuals were charged with wilful promotion of hatred, a serious and rare charge that requires the consent of the Attorney General of Ontario. This charge has been laid on 11 occasions since the commencement of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023, and only four times in the decade prior.
The accused individuals are Hosaam Hemdan, 19, of Toronto, Omer Turcan, 43, of Toronto, and Syed Hussaini, 43, of Whitby, who were each charged with wilful promotion of hatred, wearing a disguise with intent, and public incitement of hatred. Hasan Aydin, 48, and Yasaf Shaikh, also of Toronto, were each charged with wilful promotion of hatred and public incitement of hatred.
This latest development brings to six the total number of individuals charged in connection with similar incidents, including the arrest of 33-year-old Muhammad Anas Sial, of Toronto, who was charged with wilful promotion of hatred and public incitement of hatred in April and May.
