Niall Horan has responded to fans upset about a post he liked on Instagram, insisting he has "nothing but love" for Argentina.
The former One Direction star was at the centre of an unexpected social media storm after fans accused him of endorsing an offensive post that mocked Argentina's long-running claim to the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as the Islas Malvinas.
The controversy began when Horan appeared to like a post sarcastically titled: "8 times Argentina were really nice guys during the World Cup final."
The post poked fun at Argentina's conduct during the tournament, highlighting a series of controversial moments on the pitch, including Lionel Messi complaining to the referee about Spain's Marc Cucurella and defender Nahuel Molina's heavy challenge on an opponent.
The final slide, however, proved far more contentious, featuring an edited image declaring "Las Malvinas son Españolas" ("The Malvinas are Spanish"), a clear play on the slogan "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" ("The Malvinas are Argentine"), which has become a powerful national symbol in Argentina.
The sovereignty of the Falkland Islands remains disputed between the UK and Argentina, and the issue carries deep emotional significance in Argentina following the 1982 war.
Following Argentina's World Cup semi-final victory over England last week, several players celebrated by holding up a banner reading "Las Malvinas son Argentinas", prompting political controversy and calls from the UK government for FIFA to investigate whether the display breached the organisation's rules on political messaging.
As criticism of Horan spread online, Argentinian fans took to social media to express their disappointment, with one fan account posting a statement saying the backlash had moved far beyond football rivalry.
Another user wrote: "Niall has made it clear he hates Argentinians" while someone else said, "Niall has let down all his Argentinian fans."
Niall responded, saying he doesn't remember seeing the post, and that he has "nothing but love" for Argentina and its fans.
"Honest mistake," he wrote. "Truly didn't even realise I'd liked the post and don't even remember seeing it. I have nothing but love for Argentina and all my fans there."
The response was widely welcomed by many fans, with several thanking the singer for addressing the situation directly and clarifying that there had been no political intent behind the interaction.
