PFDA to Construct New Ice Plant in Sorsogon for Fishers

The Philippine Fisheries Development Authority will construct a P96.7-million ice plant in Bulan, Sorsogon to cut post-harvest losses and reinforce the fisheries supply chain across the Bicol Region.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel, Jr. emphasized that food security extends beyond increasing fish catch volumes during a site inspection at the Bulan Fish Port Complex.

The planned facility will operate as a 60-metric-ton ice plant capable of producing up to 1,200 ice blocks within a 24-hour cycle.

Storage capacity will reach 120 metric tons, equivalent to roughly 2,400 ice blocks, according to PFDA Acting General Manager Glen A. Pangapalan.

Pangapalan stated the project will enable local fisherfolk to maintain catch quality, limit spoilage, and raise household incomes through better preservation.

The Bulan Fish Port Complex processed 23,780.5 metric tons of fish in 2025, with daily unloading volumes climbing during the March-to-June peak fishing season.
