UMVA has learned that a disturbing and unprovoked attack on a 66-year-old great-grandmother aboard an Atlanta MARTA train has led to a federal charge against the suspect, John Elijah Matthews, 25, of Decatur, Georgia.
The brutal attack, which resulted in the fatal stabbing of Margaret Swan, has sent shockwaves through the community, and federal prosecutors say Matthews is now facing a federal charge that could make him eligible for life in prison or the death penalty.
According to information obtained by UMVA, Matthews was charged with committing an act of violence using a dangerous weapon with intent to cause death on a mass transportation system, a charge that could lead to severe consequences.
The victim, Swan, was described by federal officials as a "beloved great-grandmother" who was killed in "an unprovoked act of senseless violence," leaving her family and community in mourning.
The deadly attack unfolded on a northbound MARTA train on May 30, around 11:25 a.m., as Swan was riding from the Lakewood station toward Oakland City Station, according to prosecutors.
Surveillance video allegedly showed Matthews boarding the train, walking to Swan's side, and then pulling out a knife and stabbing her in the throat and chest area multiple times, in a vicious and unprovoked attack.
As the attack unfolded, other passengers fled in terror and called for help, but Swan was pronounced dead at the scene despite emergency medical aid attempts.
MARTA police officers quickly responded to the scene, apprehending Matthews and finding him with a bloody folding knife and blood on his clothes.
The FBI and the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority Police Department are investigating the case, with the FBI's Atlanta special agent in charge, Marlo Graham, stating that "this crime also impacts everyone who relies on mass transportation to move about their daily lives."
Matthews is also charged locally with felony murder, and federal prosecutors say Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche will determine whether the government will seek the death penalty if Matthews is convicted.
The community is still reeling from the shock of the brutal attack, and the investigation continues to uncover more details about the events leading up to the tragic killing of Swan.
