About a month ago, three teenage girls were arrested in Jersey City after allegedly throwing acid on a group of six women.
A spokesperson for the city recently revealed that on June 15, six women were near Wilkinson Avenue when individuals approached and threw what is believed to be sulfuric acid at them.
The victims were transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries that included skin burns and peeling.
Three of the victims were teenagers, and one of them, a 21-year-old woman, had to be transported to a hospital burn unit to be treated for second-degree burns to her face and scalp.
The three female suspects, aged 13, 14, and 15, were arrested in connection with the attack on June 16 and June 17.
Each of the girls faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon/bodily injury, illegal weapons possession, risking injury, and conspiracy.
According to officials, the incident appears to have been targeted and may have stemmed from an earlier dispute among a large group.
The victims were in their car when the teens drove by on a moped and threw sulfuric acid on them.
Sulfuric acid is a corrosive chemical that can cause severe burns and tissue damage when it comes into contact with the skin or mucous membranes, according to medical experts.
This incident comes after a similar assault in Brooklyn, where a 31-year-old man was arrested for allegedly orchestrating an acid attack on his ex-girlfriend.
The substance thrown at the victim in the Brooklyn case was later determined to be 70% sulfuric acid.
