The tech giant Apple is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to streamline its Genius Bar appointment process. Rather than implementing AI for more complex tasks, Apple is focusing on using it for transcription and text summarization.
The company has reportedly been testing an AI system called "Live Notes," which records conversations between Genius Bar employees and customers, transcribes them, and summarizes the content. This information is then added to the employee's iPad during the repair process.
The goal of Live Notes is to reduce the workload of employees taking notes during interactions with customers, allowing them to focus on providing better service rather than documenting every detail.
However, some employees have expressed concerns that this technology could be used to coach employees or influence performance reviews. Apple has reportedly alleviated these concerns by assuring employees that recordings will not be saved, managers will not receive transcripts, and employees can edit the transcript and summary before they are saved.
The Live Notes system is intended to be an opt-in program, requiring both the customer and employee to agree to its use. While the system is still in its early testing phase, it is unclear if or when Apple will expand its usage or what policies will govern it in the future.
