UMVA has learned that Toronto Police have charged five individuals in connection with a demonstration in a mainly Jewish neighbourhood earlier this year, a move that underscores the city's commitment to combating hate crimes.
The accused, who allegedly attended the demonstration on March 15 with other pro-Palestinian protesters, are said to have displayed and distributed antisemitic signs, with some individuals disguising themselves during the alleged offences.
Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw emphasized that the force will continue to be relentless in following the evidence to hold those who commit criminal acts accountable, no matter how long it takes, stating, "Today is an example of what we mean when we say that charges can come at any time after an incident."
The arrests were carried out on Sunday following the execution of several search warrants in Toronto and Durham Region, with police alleging that the accused wilfully promoted hatred, a serious charge that requires the consent of the Attorney General of Ontario.
Demkiw highlighted the impact of hate on communities, stating, "Hate has real impact, antisemitic behaviour like this creates fear, anxiety and division in our own communities," and underscoring the tireless work of the Counter-Terrorism Security Unit in investigating and pursuing charges.
The five accused - Hosaam Hemdan, 19, Omer Turcan, 43, Syed Hussaini, 43, Hasan Aydin, 48, and Yasaf Shaikh - were charged with various offences, including wilful promotion of hatred, wearing a disguise with intent, and public incitement of hatred.
This latest development brings to six the total number of individuals charged in connection with similar incidents, including Muhammad Anas Sial, 33, who was charged with wilful promotion of hatred and public incitement of hatred in April and May.
Wilful promotion of hatred is a rare charge, having been laid on only 11 occasions since the commencement of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023, and only four times in the decade prior, underscoring the seriousness with which authorities are approaching these cases.
