TRUMP'S SHUTDOWN: America's Workforce CRIPPLED!

TRUMP'S SHUTDOWN: America's Workforce CRIPPLED!

In 2019, standing before a joint session of Congress, President Trump declared, “Legal immigrants enrich our nation.” He insisted he wanted people to come to the country, “in the largest numbers ever,” but only legally. This sentiment echoed throughout his 2024 reelection campaign: “We need people,” he stated plainly.

Yet, a stark contradiction emerged. Since reentering office, the administration dramatically curtailed legal immigration, far exceeding reductions in illegal immigration. A report, even cited by the President himself, revealed legal immigration had been cut by more than twice the amount of illegal immigration – a significant shift in policy.

Promises to prioritize Christian refugees also went unfulfilled. Despite the President’s stated intention to “help them,” the refugee program was slashed from 125,000 to a mere 7,500 admissions. The program now primarily serves a small number of South Africans, with no designated slots for those fleeing religious persecution.

Initially, the President encouraged asylum seekers to apply legally at ports of entry, assuring them they could “avail themselves of our asylum system.” However, a subsequent executive order effectively eliminated this pathway, reducing lawful asylum entries by 99.9 percent. The President celebrated this outcome, sharing data from the aforementioned report as proof of his policies’ success.

The irony wasn’t lost on observers. The President often lauded his own family’s immigration story, emphasizing the “beautiful” legal path his wife took to the United States. Yet, his administration implemented policies that even impacted close family members of American citizens seeking to immigrate.

A sweeping executive order banned legal permanent immigration from over 90 nationalities, blocking roughly half of all prior immigrant visa flow. This included half of all spouses and minor children of U.S. citizens, creating immense hardship for families separated by these new restrictions.

The impact extended beyond families. A single father in Sierra Leone, caring for two disabled adult children, found his in-home caregiver blocked from returning due to the nationality ban. He described the burden as “tremendous,” a constant struggle for even basic rest.

These policies weren’t based on individual risk assessments. Modern background checks for legal immigrants are far more rigorous than those undergone by previous generations, including the President’s own family. Yet, individuals who had already spent years undergoing vetting were suddenly blocked from entry.

The government also collected nearly $1 billion in fees from legal immigrants and their American sponsors, individuals blocked by these evolving policies. This created a financial burden alongside the emotional toll of delayed or denied immigration applications.

Even highly skilled workers faced new obstacles. A $100,000 fee was imposed simply for the chance to apply for an H-1B visa, despite the President’s claim that “we need great workers.” The fee proved so restrictive it reduced entries and cost the government $20 million in revenue, keeping out nearly 90 percent of potential skilled workers.

The President also spoke of welcoming foreign students, recognizing their contribution to U.S. colleges. He acknowledged that cutting student visas in half could bankrupt many institutions. Yet, his administration cut student visas by 40 percent, costing US colleges $3 billion in revenue and forcing program cuts.

The cumulative effect of these policies is a dramatic reduction in legal immigration – twice as significant as the reduction in illegal immigration. This outcome directly contradicts the President’s repeated assertion that “we need people.”

Sources within the administration suggest the President was misled, presented with information framing the cuts as targeting “problematic immigrants” rather than a wholesale reduction in numbers. The nuance – a 90 percent reduction in skilled worker visas – was lost in translation.

The President’s instinct remains correct. America’s population growth is slowing, Social Security faces a looming shortfall, and a shrinking workforce threatens economic stability. Fewer workers supporting more retirees will inevitably lead to rising costs.

Despite arguments to the contrary, multiple analyses demonstrate that legal immigration is a net positive for the U.S. budget. While improvements to the system are warranted – streamlining the process, addressing welfare access, and ensuring immigrant contributions – the fundamental need for people remains.

The path forward is clear: follow the President’s own advice, prioritize merit, refine the process, and truly make immigration great again. America needs people, and a pragmatic approach to legal immigration is essential for a prosperous future.
