Talks between Manchester United and Aston Villa have reached an advanced stage, with the Red Devils on the verge of signing highly-coveted midfielder Youri Tielemans. The Belgium captain, who still has two years left on his contract, has a significant release clause that Villa are resigned to activating.
Tielemans is eager to make the switch to Old Trafford, just months after scoring the opening goal in Villa's Europa League final win over Freiburg. The 29-year-old midfielder will bring a wealth of Premier League experience to Manchester United, having previously starred for Leicester City.
During his time at the Foxes, Tielemans scored the winning goal in the 2021 FA Cup final against Chelsea and was a key cog in their side. He moved to Villa Park on a free transfer following Leicester's relegation in 2023 and has been instrumental in Unai Emery's side qualifying for the Champions League in two of the past three seasons.
Tielemans also enjoyed a productive World Cup, scoring twice in Belgium's remarkable comeback victory over Senegal but missed their quarter-final defeat to Spain due to an injury sustained in the warm-up. His impending departure will be a devastating blow to Emery, who was already set to be without midfielder Amadou Onana.
The loss comes less than 24 hours after Aston Villa hijacked Newcastle United's transfer for highly-rated Swiss midfielder Johan Manzambi, who is set to sign from Freiburg for £60m. Manchester United's capture of Tielemans will be seen as a significant coup, but it will undoubtedly weaken Villa's squad ahead of the new season.
