The rise of socialism and the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) has grown increasingly concerning in American politics, as a recent poll has revealed its widening influence among Democrats.
The poll, conducted by a public opinion research firm in conjunction with a major news outlet, found that Democrats identifying as democratic socialists are less likely to have a college degree and more likely to earn less than $100,000 a year, compared to their non-socialist counterparts.
The same poll showed that democratic socialists are more motivated to vote this year than other Democrats, with 66% signaling they are "extremely motivated" to vote, compared to 57% for other Democrats.
Recent election results have seen democratic socialists notch significant victories, including the election of socialist Zohran Mamdani as mayor in New York City and Katie Wilson as mayor in Seattle.
On the federal level, several DSA-backed candidates have recently won Democratic primaries for Congress in key states, including New York, Pennsylvania, and Colorado, raising concerns about the DSA's growing influence.
The DSA's updated policy platform calls for radical transformations to America's governance system, including eliminating the U.S. Senate and replacing the president and the Supreme Court with an executive branch and judiciary chosen by and subordinate to Congress.
The platform also advocates for mass amnesty for all immigrants, defunding the Department of War, and establishing a 32-hour work week "with no reduction in pay or benefits," among other extreme policies.
Republican leaders have expressed concern about the DSA's growing influence, with one official warning that the party's radical socialist agenda will "come back to haunt them in key races this November."
A spokesperson for the Republican National Committee said that Americans "overwhelmingly reject the Democrats' radical socialist agenda" and that the left's "embrace of these toxic policies and candidates will come back to haunt them in key races this November."
