SHEN YUN UNDER ATTACK: Toronto Shows AXED After Terrifying Threats!

SHEN YUN UNDER ATTACK: Toronto Shows AXED After Terrifying Threats!

A wave of unsettling events has silenced the stage at Toronto’s Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts. All five remaining performances of Shen Yun, a celebrated classical Chinese dance and music show, have been cancelled following what authorities are calling hoax bomb threats.

The initial threat surfaced on Sunday, leading to the cancellation of that day’s performance. Despite assurances from Toronto Police – who confirmed threats were made only on Sunday and Monday – escalating concerns prompted the venue to halt all subsequent shows, including two scheduled for Saturday.

Those connected with the show believe these threats aren’t isolated incidents, but rather a calculated tactic. The Falun Dafa Association of Toronto, the local presenter, attributes the “fake threats” to a deliberate campaign orchestrated by Beijing to suppress Shen Yun’s message.

Shen Yun showcases Chinese culture before communism.

Shen Yun uniquely portrays the richness of traditional Chinese culture, a period often described as “China before communism,” and also sheds light on contemporary human rights concerns within the country. This perspective, according to the Association, makes the show a target.

The Association reports a disturbing pattern over the past two years: more than a dozen false bomb and death threats targeting Shen Yun performances across Canada. Previous incidents in Mississauga, Kitchener, and Vancouver were deemed non-credible, and shows proceeded with enhanced security measures.

In Mississauga, a performance was delayed two hours while authorities investigated a threat. Initially, the Four Seasons Centre had agreed to increased security – including K-9 units and additional personnel – to allow the remaining shows to continue.

However, a sudden shift occurred. The venue cited “escalating threats” over the subsequent 48 hours as the reason for the complete cancellation, leaving thousands of ticket holders affected and scrambling for refunds.

The Association expressed deep disappointment, arguing that despite full cooperation and a willingness to bolster security, the decision to cancel was unprecedented. They urge the theatre to reconsider, standing with artists against what they see as external pressure.

Globally, over 150 similar false threats have targeted Shen Yun, none of which have ever materialized. The show was founded by practitioners of Falun Dafa, a spiritual discipline that has faced severe persecution by the Chinese Communist Party for nearly three decades due to its independent beliefs and values.

The cancellation raises questions about the balance between security concerns and artistic freedom, and highlights the complex geopolitical forces that can impact cultural expression. The silence at the Four Seasons Centre echoes a larger struggle for voices seeking to share a story of a China beyond the current regime.
