University of Toronto Professor Jacob Tsimerman Wins Top Math Award

The prestigious Fields Medal, often called the “Nobel Prize of mathematics,” was awarded this year to four researchers, including 38‑year‑old Jacob Tsimerman from the University of Toronto.

Tsimerman received the honor for his work on the Andre‑Oort conjecture, a longstanding problem in arithmetic geometry that had resisted solutions for decades.

He noted that the achievement was a collective effort, stating, “It’s an incredible honour to win this award – not just for me, but for all my collaborators without whom this truly would not be possible.”

Tsimerman earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics at the University of Toronto in 2006, after beginning his studies at age 16, and completed his PhD at Princeton University in 2011.

During his doctoral work, he encountered the Andre‑Oort conjecture while tackling problems presented by his advisor, mathematician Peter Sarnak.

Following a stint as a junior fellow in Harvard University’s Society of Fellows, he joined the University of Toronto Faculty of Arts and Science, becoming the youngest full professor in its mathematics department.

His fascination with mathematics began with a puzzle posed by his physicist grandfather about a broken toaster and three pieces of bread, which sparked a lifelong passion for problem‑solving.

The Fields Medal is awarded every four years to up to four mathematicians under the age of 40, and recipients receive a gold medallion and a monetary prize of $15,000.

Tsimerman is the first mathematician based at a Canadian institution to receive the award and the second Canadian overall.
