The trial of Jonathan Rinderknecht, accused of deliberately igniting the Palisades Fire, has ended in a mistrial due to jurors' inability to reach a unanimous verdict.
Rinderknecht was arrested in October 2025 and charged with destruction of property by means of fire after being accused in the Palisades Fire in January 2025. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Ten of the California jurors believed Rinderknecht was not guilty, while two thought he was responsible for the fire. The Palisades Fire caused an estimated $35 billion to $45 billion in damage and led to the deaths of 12 people.
During the trial, a behavioral analyst testified that Rinderknecht's behavior is similar to that of someone driven by "societal revenge." The analyst stated that individuals with this motivation often focus on personal problems and use various methods to express their anger.
Rinderknecht used ChatGPT to create a "dystopian image" of the world, where he designed an image representing a barrier between rich people and those who are less affluent. He was partly inspired by Luigi Mangione, who is accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Prosecutors said that in the months leading up to the fire, Rinderknecht became increasingly angry with his life and society at large. He fixated on Mangione and searched for terms related to his case, including "free LuigiMangione" and "lets take down all the billionaires."
The U.S. Attorney stated that they intend to retry the case before a new jury and obtain guilty verdicts on all charged counts. The case is expected to continue in the coming months.
