A disturbing incident unfolded at a Newcastle recreation centre earlier this month, leaving a 12-year-old shaken and a 65-year-old man facing serious charges. The alleged event occurred on April 9th, within the male changeroom of the Dianne Hamre Recreation Centre, shattering the sense of safety expected in such a space.
According to reports, a young boy showering in the facility had his privacy violated when a man allegedly pulled back a curtain shielding the shower stall. Despite the victim immediately closing the curtain, the suspect is accused of repeatedly reopening it, escalating the unsettling situation.
The ordeal didn't end there. As the boy left the shower, he was allegedly followed by the suspect, who attempted to engage him in conversation. Frightened, the youth fled the changeroom and immediately informed a waiting parent, bringing the incident to light.
Eugene Gareau was subsequently arrested and charged with secretly observing/recording a nude person and exposing genitals to a person under 16 years old for a sexual purpose. Authorities are now deeply concerned that other individuals may have been targeted and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Meanwhile, in Oshawa, a weekend encounter turned terrifying for one man who was robbed and threatened with a firearm. The incident took place Saturday evening as the victim waited to meet a friend in the Stevenson Rd. N.-Rossland Rd. W. area.
Confronted by two individuals, the victim was assaulted, robbed of cash, and subjected to a menacing threat involving a firearm before managing to seek refuge inside a nearby residence. Police swiftly responded, establishing a perimeter around the property.
Three suspects were apprehended as they exited the residence shortly after officers arrived. A fourth individual remained inside for several hours before finally surrendering to authorities. Thankfully, the victim did not sustain any physical injuries during the ordeal.
A search of the residence yielded four imitation firearms, adding another layer of concern to the already alarming situation. Bailee Chircop, Terry Woolner, Anthony Murray, and Cody Grose now face a range of charges, including robbery, obstructing a peace officer, and weapons-related offences.
These incidents underscore a troubling pattern of alleged criminal activity within the region, prompting a renewed call for vigilance and community cooperation. Investigators are actively seeking any information that could assist in these cases and encourage anyone with knowledge to contact the Durham Regional Police or Crime Stoppers.
