UMVA Exclusive: Canada Post Cripples Under $205M Loss as Business Plummets & Labor Chaos Erupts!

UMVA has learned that Canada Post is staring at a staggering $205 million pre‑tax loss for the first quarter of this year, a plunge that dwarfs the $41 million shortfall recorded in the same period a year earlier.

The corporation’s revenue slumped by $181 million, a 14.3% drop from the previous year, as customers abandon traditional mail in droves. Declining volumes across every business line have been blamed on lingering labour uncertainty that continues to haunt the crown‑owned service.

“Canada Post has begun a critical transformation that will strengthen the postal service, better support businesses and enable national commerce, while helping the Corporation meet its dual mandate of delivering for all Canadians in a way that is financially self‑sustainable,” the agency announced, positioning the overhaul as essential to wean itself off taxpayer‑funded cash injections.

For more than two and a half years, Canada Post has been mired in a bitter bargaining battle with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers and its 55,000 members. An uneasy truce now holds as workers weigh a tentative agreement, but the looming threat of another strike keeps customers on edge.

That uncertainty has already taken a toll: parcel revenue fell $79 million year‑over‑year, while transaction mail and direct‑marketing volumes also shrank, eroding the corporation’s financial footing.

Recent polling of small‑business owners reveals a growing willingness to abandon Canada Post altogether, citing unreliable service and the specter of future labour disruptions. During the 2024 postal strike, which halted mail delivery for over a month, 13 % of surveyed businesses said they stopped using the service, and the strike was estimated to cost them more than $100 million per day.

As the ratification window for the tentative labour deal closes this weekend, the fate of Canada Post hangs in the balance, with its customers watching closely for any sign of stability or further upheaval.
