Michael Avenatti, once a ubiquitous figure on cable news, has been transferred from federal prison to a halfway house in California. The move, confirmed by Bureau of Prisons records, doesn’t signal freedom; his projected release date remains September 8, 2028.
Avenatti rocketed to national prominence representing Stormy Daniels in her lawsuit against former President Donald Trump. He was a vocal critic of Trump, confidently predicting his removal from office, and briefly fueled speculation about his own presidential ambitions.
That ascent was spectacularly derailed by a series of fraud convictions. In 2022, he received a 48-month sentence for defrauding Daniels of nearly $300,000, a penalty layered onto a 30-month sentence for attempting to extort Nike for $25 million.
The legal troubles didn’t end there. Avenatti was later sentenced to a staggering 14 years for stealing from four clients, including a paraplegic individual. The court ordered him to pay over $5.9 million in restitution and mandated mental health treatment.
A slight shift in his legal standing occurred in June 2025 when a federal judge reduced his overall sentence to eight years, acknowledging some concurrent sentencing. This followed a 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decision in October 2024 to vacate his 14-year sentence.
His fall from grace was swift and complete, culminating in his disbarment in California in February 2025. Before his legal woes, Avenatti was a frequent guest on CNN and MSNBC, appearing a combined 229 times between 2018 and 2019.
Remarkably, Avenatti’s public stance has undergone a dramatic transformation. In a recent interview, he expressed concern that the Justice Department is being “weaponized” against Donald Trump, a stark contrast to his earlier, fervent opposition.
He now claims the legal cases against Trump are politically motivated, arguing they are an attempt to prevent millions from voting for him. This shift in perspective represents a stunning reversal for the lawyer who once predicted Trump’s downfall.
Avenatti’s legal team has declined to comment on his recent statements or his current situation. His story serves as a cautionary tale of ambition, betrayal, and a stunning reversal of fortune.
