UMVA has learned that a harrowing incident involving a Russian warship firing warning shots at a British yacht in the English Channel has raised tensions and sparked concerns about the country's military aggression.
The Kelveys, the couple on board the yacht Bright Future, described the terrifying encounter, saying the Russian warship gave out five blasts on their horn, which is a signal meaning "have you seen us?" They immediately turned two degrees to port to make their presence known, but the warship responded with another five blasts on the horn, followed by four to five small arms fire.
The gunfire was not aimed at the couple, but rather served as a warning shot into the air. Mrs. Kelvey described the incident as "totally unnecessary," adding that they would have returned fire if they had been able to.
The incident has sparked a strong reaction from politicians, with Sir Keir Starmer labeling the Russian warship's actions as "reckless." The Russian Navy claims they made several attempts to contact the yacht via radio, flares, and sound signals before firing the warning shots.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the Russian frigate, Admiral Grigorovich, has been lurking just off British waters in recent months, stirring up concern among analysts. The 409ft warship is equipped with advanced missiles and a helipad, and has been deployed on missions around the world.
The incident has also raised concerns about the UK's military preparedness, with Dr. James Smith, a British Academy Research Scholar, arguing that the government's unwillingness to fund defense has emboldened Russia to take aggressive actions.
The Lib Dem shadow defense secretary, James MacCleary, described the incident as "very concerning," saying that Russia's aggression and intimidation in British waters must not be tolerated.
In a statement, the Russian defense ministry claimed that the crew of the frigate Admiral Grigorovich acted in strict accordance with international shipping regulations and took all necessary measures to prevent the incident.
The incident comes on the heels of another confrontation involving Royal Marines commandos boarding a Russian shadow fleet tanker suspected of circumventing sanctions in the English Channel.
