A trucker on Highway 402 learned a harsh lesson about multitasking. Ontario Provincial Police stopped a tractor-trailer after witnessing the driver actively participating in a video conference call – using Teams – while barreling down the highway.
The incident, which occurred on a Sunday, wasn’t about impressive efficiency, but a dangerous disregard for road safety. Police were unequivocal: this wasn’t multitasking, it was blatant distracted driving, putting countless lives at risk with every passing mile.
The driver now faces charges under the Highway Traffic Act for operating a vehicle with a visible display screen. Authorities emphasize that ongoing campaigns will continue to target distracted driving through both education and strict enforcement.
The message is stark and simple: when you’re behind the wheel, you are unavailable. A single moment of inattention can have devastating, life-altering consequences. Focus remains paramount, with absolutely no room for excuses.
In a separate incident, an 18-year-old woman in Aylmer is facing criminal charges following a disturbance at a local group home. Police responded to a call on March 23rd regarding a dispute between a resident and a staff member.
The argument reportedly stemmed from a disagreement over television access. The situation quickly escalated, resulting in a staff member being struck with an object and threats being directed towards another employee.
The 18-year-old has been charged with uttering threats to cause death and assault. She has been released with conditions and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
Just days later, on March 25th, two Aylmer police officers were assaulted following a routine traffic stop. Officers observed a vehicle drifting across the centre line on John Street South, prompting them to pull the driver over.
After the driver was taken into custody, a struggle ensued, resulting in minor injuries to both officers. Fortunately, medical attention wasn’t required, but the incident highlights the unpredictable dangers faced by law enforcement.
The 36-year-old female driver now faces multiple charges, including assaulting a peace officer, resisting arrest, failing to comply with a demand, and possessing open alcohol within the vehicle.
