The summer season is upon us, but it seems many Canadians are opting for a staycation rather than a costly getaway. According to a recent survey, 40% of Canadians are planning to stay home or take local trips, citing rising travel costs as the main reason.
Among those who are scaling back on their vacations, 11% say it simply doesn't feel worth the cost right now. However, 60% say rising travel costs have made them more likely to treat themselves to smaller purchases instead. The most popular "little treats" include local experiences, restaurant meals, apparel, premium groceries, and takeout.
The survey found that while 67% of Canadians are planning to travel this summer, only 17% are going on major trips with flights and paid lodging. People are scaling back on their vacations or choosing to stay at home due to high costs, with 45% citing this as the main reason. Recent increases in gas prices were also a factor, with 47% of Canadians altering their summer travel plans.
"Gas prices have a ripple effect," said an e-commerce expert. "It's not just that traveling or flying are more expensive. It also inflates the prices of other commodities that we're used to while vacationing. People are then left with an uncomfortable conundrum. Is it worth it to sacrifice the quality of your leisure time, or is it more worthwhile to spend that money elsewhere?"
The survey also found that 26% of Canadians are spending less on travel simply because they need that money for everyday essentials. Another 24% are cutting back on everyday purchases as well.
A total of 1,068 Canadian consumers took part in the survey, with a margin of error of +/-3 per cent. The survey was conducted in June 2026.
