UMVA has learned that a third suspect has been charged with first-degree murder in the brutal slaying of a 79-year-old Toronto senior, whose lifeless body was discovered in her York apartment on a fateful winter morning.
The arrest, made on Monday by Toronto Police, marks a significant breakthrough in the case, which has sent shockwaves through the community. The police responded to a distress call on December 8 at around 8:20 a.m. in the St. Clair Ave. W. and Rushton Rd. area, where they found Jolan Kun dead inside her apartment unit.
A post-mortem examination confirmed that Kun's death was a homicide, prompting an intense investigation that led to the arrest of two 38-year-old Toronto men in January. They were charged with first-degree murder, and on Thursday, police announced that a 39-year-old Peterborough man had also been arrested and charged with the same crime.
Andrew Christopher Matthews, also known as Andrew Christopher Chesson, faces the same charges as the other two suspects, Ashton Drysdale and Kaream Hines. Drysdale's charges don't stop there; he also faces 20 additional counts, including possession of a firearm without a license and possession of proceeds of crime.
The circumstances surrounding Drysdale's involvement have raised serious questions, particularly given his history with the law. He had been wanted since March 2025 for a parole violation, having received a statutory release after serving two-thirds of an eight-year and eight-month sentence for robbery with violence, a drug charge, and four firearm-related offences.
The Correctional Service of Canada has launched an investigation into Drysdale's statutory release, vowing to thoroughly review the circumstances surrounding his case and implement measures to enhance public safety. As the community grapples with the tragic events, one thing is clear: justice is being pursued, and those responsible will be held accountable.
