Medicaid fraud has become a major concern in the United States, with some states allegedly using the system to exploit federal funds. Dr. Mehmet Oz, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) administrator, has spoken out about the issue, urging governors to join the administration's anti-fraud push.
In an interview with Fox News Digital, Dr. Oz expressed his concerns about states using Medicaid-funded care programs as an economic engine for their state. He claimed that some states are distributing federal reimbursements to pay unemployed people, creating a system that benefits the state financially. Dr. Oz described this practice as a "feature" of the program, saying that it's not a flaw but rather a deliberate attempt to exploit the system.
Dr. Oz specifically targeted California Governor Gavin Newsom, accusing him of failing to adequately address fraud in his state despite internal warnings. He claimed that Governor Newsom's state has been "dabbling" in anti-fraud efforts but hasn't taken the necessary steps to stop widespread fraud. As a result, the Trump administration cut over $1.3 billion in California's Medicaid reimbursements.
Dr. Oz argued that the service industry's unionization of workers in Medicaid-funded programs creates a system where union dues can be used to fund political action committees, benefiting one party. He lamented that the federal government is paying for this system, allowing one party to gain an advantage in local and state elections.
The Trump administration has taken steps to combat Medicaid fraud nationwide, including the formation of a new anti-fraud task force led by Vice President JD Vance. Dr. Oz encouraged all governors to work together with the administration to put an end to fraud and ensure that federal funds are being used wisely.
Dr. Oz emphasized the importance of cooperation between governors and the federal government in addressing Medicaid fraud. He warned that when governors don't work together with the president, they can hinder the administration's efforts to combat fraud and create a "circle down the drain" effect.
