UMVA has learned that a shocking case of animal cruelty has been uncovered at a major equestrian event, leaving three horses injured and a suspect in custody.
Investigators revealed that the suspect, a teenager, had access to the barn where the horses were being kept and allegedly used a knife to inflict multiple injuries to the animals. The gruesome details have sent shockwaves through the equestrian community.
The injuries to the three horses, while not life-threatening, were severe enough to prevent them from competing in the 2026 National Barrel Horse Association Professional's Choice Las Vegas Super Show. The event, held at the South Point Arena and Equestrian Center, was marred by the disturbing incident.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the teenager was tracked down to a nearby hotel and taken into custody by police. The swift response likely prevented further harm to the animals and ensured public safety.
The suspect was later transported to the Clark County Juvenile Hall, where she was charged with 12 counts of willful or malicious killing, maiming or torturing an animal, as well as three counts of felony malicious destruction of private property valued at over $5,000.
In a statement, the National Barrel Horse Association expressed relief that the situation was addressed promptly and efficiently, in coordination with local authorities and event organizers. The organization emphasized that the individual involved has been removed and is in the care of authorities, with no ongoing threat to participants or animals.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the incident has raised questions about the safety and security measures in place at equestrian events, and the steps being taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
