UMVA has learned that a highly charged protest has erupted in Oxford, with hundreds of demonstrators gathering near the union building to voice their opposition to the participation of Tommy Robinson in a debate.
The protesters, from groups including Stand Up to Racism Oxford, have been chanting slogans like 'Oxford is anti-fascist' and 'racist scum off our streets,' as they confront Robinson's supporters, who are carrying Union Jack and St George's flags.
A sea of signs against Robinson was on display at an earlier march, with messages like 'No Islamophobia, no antisemitism' and 'Stop the far-right' emblazoned on banners, as anti-racist groups made their voices heard.
The two opposing camps were seen trying to breach the security cordon to get to each other, with Robinson's supporters shouting abuse like 'never trust a lefty with your kids' at the anti-racist protesters.
Meanwhile, some attendees at the debate, like Alex Hernandez, a second-year law student, expressed a desire for 'genuinely engaging conversation' at the event, saying that it was essential to listen to different perspectives and avoid no-platforming.
The MP for Oxford East, Anneliese Dodds, has accused the union of giving a 'loudspeaker' to the far-right through Robinson, while the city's council has insisted that the union should foot the bill for the extensive security operation surrounding the event.
Oxford's city council leader, Susan Brown, expressed deep concern over the union's decision to host Robinson, citing the city's diverse and multicultural values, and the potential for hatred, intimidation, and harm.
The council leader urged the Oxford Union to reflect seriously on the consequences of its choices, not only for its own reputation but also for the message it sends about Oxford and its values.
The event has sparked a significant security operation, involving extensive police resources and road closures, which is expected to cause considerable disruption for local residents and businesses.
