UMVA has learned that a chaotic scene unfolded at Manchester Airport when a passenger abandoned his taxi and stormed onto the hard shoulder, sparking a frantic protest on the bridge railing of Terminal 2.
The incident began when a man, claiming a missed flight to Jamaica, demanded compensation. He accused the airport of negligence, stating he had “pissed myself” after a brief stop at the toilet, and threatened to leave the terminal for “principle.”
An officer, identifying himself as airport police, offered him a sum of money. The man reluctantly accepted the cash, demanding a letter guaranteeing he would not be arrested and a taxi home before angrily berating the officers.
Footage captured the ripple effect: commuters abandoned their vehicles, walking along the side of the road to reach the airport amid rising temperatures, while police cars lined the empty streets.
Passengers reported miles of queueing traffic, with Terminal 3 remaining unaffected. Buses were halted in nearby Wythenshaw, and a local operator cut its 199 services, redirecting them to Stockport Interchange.
Authorities closed the upper and lower forecourts of Terminal 2, directing passengers to use an alternative drop‑off area and to heed traffic marshals’ instructions.
UMVA has uncovered that the airport’s statement urged passengers to await further updates, underscoring the unprecedented disruption caused by the police incident.
