CHURCH SHOCKER: They Demanded She Change to Be Saved!

CHURCH SHOCKER: They Demanded She Change to Be Saved!

Joann Carver, a 74-year-old woman, experienced a profound sense of betrayal after what she describes as shocking and deeply hurtful remarks made at the Lighthouse Church in Ely last June.

Having undergone gender-affirming surgery in 2022, Ms. Carver initially found a welcoming community at the church, a place where she felt a sense of belonging and spiritual upliftment. She and her partner, Hannah, had begun to build a life centered around the church’s services and fellowship.

That sense of safety shattered when Ms. Carver expressed her desire to be baptised. The request, she says, triggered a series of conversations that quickly devolved into judgment and rejection, centered around her identity as a trans woman and her relationship with Hannah.

She was told, point-blank, that she was “sinning” simply by existing as her authentic self and by being in a loving relationship. This wasn’t a harsh condemnation from a stranger, but a painful message delivered by individuals who had previously offered kindness and acceptance.

The church leaders suggested, in a follow-up meeting, that she demonstrate repentance by altering her appearance – specifically, by wearing trousers and attempting to grow a beard. The implication was clear: conformity, not genuine faith, was the key to acceptance.

Ms. Carver felt utterly “gobsmacked” by the sudden shift in attitude, particularly from someone she had considered a friend. The demand for change felt like a cruel and impossible burden, a denial of her very being.

Following a formal complaint, Ms. Carver received an apology from a pastor, but it felt hollow and was followed by silence. She and Hannah ultimately left the church, heartbroken and feeling deeply discriminated against.

The church, in response, stated that its leaders acted “in good faith” and reaffirmed its belief in traditional biblical teachings regarding sex and gender. They maintain that their convictions are long-held and guide their approach to baptism and discipleship.

However, Ms. Carver argues that this adherence to rigid doctrine comes at the cost of compassion and genuine Christian love. She believes the church’s “un-Christian attitude” forced her to choose between her faith and her identity, a choice no one should have to make.

The experience left Ms. Carver feeling ashamed and withdrawn, missing the community she once cherished but unable to reconcile its rejection with her own sense of self-worth. It’s a painful reminder of the barriers that still exist for transgender individuals seeking acceptance and belonging.
