Singapore operates a dedicated stormwater network separate from its treated water collection system, a design that helps prevent both pollution and overflow during heavy rains.

Singapore’s public agency oversees the entire urban water cycle, coordinating all aspects from collection to treatment.
Decades of experience with monsoon flooding in the 1960s and 1970s led to extensive infrastructure investments that now underpin the country’s flood defenses.
As a result, flood‑prone land has dropped from more than 3,000 hectares to roughly 30 hectares, thanks to improved drainage and raised development platforms in residential areas.
Key components of the system include capturing and storing rainwater, reusing it where possible, and exploring alternative water sources.
The network spans over 6,000 kilometers of drains and canals that channel runoff into 17 reservoirs.
An integrated agency structure ensures that flood management operates without departmental silos, with all stakeholders reporting to a single executive, board, and minister.
