MAN CHARGED FOR SHOOTING AT SECRET SERVICE ON VANCE MOTORCADE — BRAZEN ATTACK SPARKS OUTRAGE

MAN CHARGED FOR SHOOTING AT SECRET SERVICE ON VANCE MOTORCADE — BRAZEN ATTACK SPARKS OUTRAGE

The calm of a Monday afternoon near the Washington Monument shattered when a Texas man opened fire on Secret Service agents—just as Vice President J.D. Vance's motorcade rolled through the intersection.

A teenage bystander crossing the street with his family was struck by a bullet, hit in the leg. He survived with a grazing wound, but the terror was instantaneous.

Michael Marx, 45, of Midland, Texas, now faces federal charges: assaulting federal officers with a dangerous weapon, using a firearm during a crime of violence, and unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

"We will prove this defendant carried an illegal firearm into the heart of Washington, D.C., opened fire at Secret Service officers near a crowded intersection, and shot an innocent bystander who was simply crossing the street with his family," said U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro in a statement that crackled with resolve.

The affidavit from a Secret Service agent reveals a chilling sequence. A plainclothes agent spotted Marx on the sidewalk, appearing to conceal a firearm on his right side. The motorcade route was directly ahead.

Uniformed officers moved to intercept Marx at a crosswalk, where he had blended into a group of pedestrians. When they approached, he didn't surrender—he reached into his waistband, pulled a gun, and sprinted across the street.

Once on the other side, Marx turned and fired directly at one of the officers. A civilian witness stood behind that officer, and a teenage boy standing behind the officer caught the ricochet in his leg.

Officers returned fire. Marx went down, hit in the hand, left arm, and upper abdomen. On the ambulance ride to George Washington University Hospital, he shouted, "F* the White House" and "Kill me, kill me, kill me."

Investigators recovered a loaded Sig Sauer P365 9 mm handgun. Marx had a Texas driver's license and used aliases including Patrick Michael and Michael Zavici. He had no license to carry a firearm in the District of Columbia.

The teenage victim's wound was superficial—a grazing injury from a bullet ricochet. He was treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries. But the message from federal prosecutors was unmistakable: anyone who brings gun violence within steps of the seat of government will face the most serious charges available.
