MANHUNT: MALL SHOOTER ON THE LOOSE!

MANHUNT: MALL SHOOTER ON THE LOOSE!

A brazen daylight robbery at Fairview Mall in North York unfolded Tuesday morning, leaving a security guard wounded and a city on edge. Police are urgently seeking 53-year-old Kyle Douglas Prouse, a Montreal man now considered armed and dangerous.

The incident began shortly after 10:00 a.m. inside the Michael Hill jewelry store. Authorities believe Prouse entered the mall with a clear intention: to steal jewelry. As he made his escape, a confrontation with a mall security guard turned violent, resulting in a gunshot wound to the guard’s torso.

First responders rushed the injured security guard to hospital, initially in life-threatening condition. Thankfully, his status has since been upgraded to stable. Investigators revealed this wasn’t an isolated event; the same jewelry store had been targeted in previous smash-and-grab thefts, most recently in October 2025.

Kyle Douglas Prouse, 53, of Montreal, is wanted by Toronto Police.

Prouse initially fled the scene in a white construction-style van, which was quickly recovered by police a short distance from the mall. He then continued his escape in a black Honda Accord, remaining at large as of Tuesday afternoon. Investigators are actively pursuing all leads.

Descriptions of Prouse have been released to the public: a white male, between 5’6” and 6’ tall, last seen wearing a grey hoodie and pants, a blue baseball cap, and a white medical mask. Distinctive details include black shoes and flecks of white paint on his clothing.

This shooting is the latest in a disturbing trend of gun violence at shopping malls across the Greater Toronto Area. Just weeks prior, a man was fatally shot at a GO bus terminal near Yorkdale Mall, and two separate shootings occurred at Burlington Centre and Woodbine Mall, claiming two lives.

“We understand how concerning this is,” stated Inspector Kristy Smith, addressing reporters outside Fairview Mall. “An incident like this has effects for the community.” Police have increased their presence in the area, with the holdup squad leading the investigation and a community hub within the mall providing a visible police presence.

The thoughts of the police force are with the injured security guard, a familiar face who regularly collaborated with officers patrolling the mall. The search for Kyle Douglas Prouse continues, and authorities urge anyone with information to come forward immediately.

A black Honda Accord is also being sought by police.
