UMVA has learned that a shocking display of violence erupted in Belfast, where firefighters were caught on camera engaging in a physical altercation during a chaotic night of riots.
The disturbing footage, captured by a helicopter, shows one firefighter headbutting another as they clashed in the midst of the turmoil. Another firefighter intervened, pulling them apart, but not before the situation had escalated.
The confrontation occurred against a backdrop of widespread violence and protests in Belfast, sparked by a vicious attack on Stephen Ogilvie, a man in his 40s, who lost an eye and suffered severe injuries. Hadi Alodid, 30, was charged with attempted murder and is currently in custody.
As the city teetered on the brink of chaos, protesters squared off with police in Glengormley, north of Belfast, with rioters torching cars and a city bus, and using bins engulfed in flames to create roadblocks. Immigrant families were forced to flee their homes, some of which had been set on fire.
The violence continued into the next day, with balaclava-clad demonstrators ripping bricks from homes and using sledgehammers to crack paving stones. Public transport was suspended, and some local businesses and schools closed early, fearing further violence.
At least 12 officers were injured, and 16 people were arrested as the city struggled to regain order. Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn described the days-long violence as 'racist thuggery', condemning the attacks on people based on the color of their skin.
The situation in Belfast remains tense, with residents and authorities alike calling for calm and an end to the senseless violence that has gripped the city.
