Farmer and former parish official Jamie Davis has secured the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat in Louisiana, a state that has consistently voted Republican in recent elections.
Davis won the Democratic runoff against New Orleans business owner Gary Crockett, benefitting from strong backing by the state party and a significant advantage in campaign funding and staff resources.
His victory positions him for a challenging contest, as he seeks to become the first Louisiana Democrat elected to the Senate in 18 years.
On the Republican side, Representative Julia Letlow and State Treasurer John Fleming emerged as the top two candidates in the primary, advancing to a runoff after incumbent Senator Bill Cassidy finished third.
Letlow led the primary by a double‑digit margin over Fleming, but no candidate reached the 50 percent threshold required to avoid a runoff.
Cassidy’s third‑place finish marks the first time an incumbent Republican senator has lost a renomination bid since 2012.
Following the primary results, political leaders praised Letlow’s performance and noted the end of Cassidy’s Senate career, while Cassidy’s concession speech emphasized respect for the democratic process.
Letlow, who won a congressional seat in 2021 after her husband’s untimely death, has highlighted support from the governor and national figures throughout her Senate campaign.
Fleming, a former congressman and former White House deputy chief of staff, has positioned himself as the most conservative option in the GOP primary.
