The turquoise waters off the Kona coast held a terrifying secret Thursday afternoon. A routine snorkel tour transformed into a brutal attack when a young man allegedly turned on the boat’s captain, plunging a knife into him while both were in the water.
Avery Nissen, a 21-year-old from Kansas, is accused of repeatedly stabbing Stanley Lurbiecki, a 62-year-old veteran of the Hawaiian boating industry. The attack unfolded during a three-hour excursion, leaving Lurbiecki with grievous wounds to his head, hands, and abdomen.
Responding officers arrived at Honokōhau Harbor at 3:21 p.m. to a scene of chaos and shock. Passengers aboard the catamaran had already intervened, bravely restraining Nissen as he continued his assault with a filet knife.
Lurbiecki was immediately transported to a local hospital, where he is currently listed in stable condition. His colleagues describe him as a “hero” and a “fighter,” expressing immense relief that the situation didn’t escalate further.
The motive behind the violent act remains a chilling mystery. Investigators have yet to uncover any explanation for why Nissen allegedly targeted the experienced captain during what should have been a peaceful day on the water.
Witnesses praised the quick thinking and professionalism of the boat’s crew, who managed to subdue the attacker and provide initial aid to the injured captain. The incident has sent ripples of disbelief through the local boating community.
Nissen is now facing charges of second-degree attempted murder, along with first and second-degree assault. Bail has been set at a staggering $1.57 million, and he is scheduled to appear in court Monday afternoon.
The serenity of a Hawaiian snorkel tour was shattered, leaving behind a community grappling with the senselessness of the attack and hoping for a full recovery for the man who dedicated his life to sharing the beauty of the islands.
