A routine booking at the Columbia County Jail in Wisconsin nearly turned tragic. A sheriff’s deputy, meticulously cataloging evidence seized from a suspect, unexpectedly faced a hidden and potent threat.
The incident unfolded on March 31st, as Jose Fredy Rodriguez Acuna, 25, was being processed following a traffic stop that revealed drug charges. Deputies began inventorying Acuna’s possessions, unaware of the danger concealed within seemingly ordinary items.
While handling cash taken from the suspect, the deputy unfolded a bill and a cloud of fine powder erupted, striking her directly in the face. This wasn’t harmless dust; it was a dangerous combination of fentanyl and cocaine, instantly creating a life-threatening situation.
The deputy immediately experienced a severe medical event, a chilling reminder of the potency of the drugs she’d encountered. Quick action by fellow deputies proved critical, as they administered Narcan, a life-saving medication designed to reverse opioid overdoses.
Rushed to a local hospital, the deputy is thankfully expected to make a full recovery. The substance that caused the exposure was confirmed to be a mixture of cocaine and the incredibly powerful opioid, fentanyl.
Acuna now faces charges of cocaine and narcotic drug possession, and is being held on a $1,000 bond. His case has also drawn the attention of federal authorities, with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement lodging a detainer request and taking him into their custody.
Sheriff Roger Brandner emphasized the constant risks faced by jail staff. He explained that individuals involved in drug offenses frequently attempt to conceal contraband within their belongings, extending the danger far beyond initial encounters on the street.
Brandner praised the swift and effective response of his team, highlighting their preparedness and professionalism in handling a potentially fatal emergency. Their actions undoubtedly saved a life and underscored the ever-present dangers inherent in law enforcement.
