Professional tennis legend Serena Williams has avoided a hefty fine after skipping her post-match press conference following her first-round defeat at Wimbledon.
Williams accepted a wildcard invitation from the All England Club to play her professional singles match since the 2022 US Open. She was handed a favorable first-round match against Australia's Maya Joint, who had just one win in her last 14 outings.
Despite the favorable draw, Williams was unable to fully wind back the clock as she fell to a 3-6 7-6 6-3 defeat to the World No. 87. The 44-year-old fought back well after going a set and a break down but eventually faded to allow Joint to reach the second round at SW19 for the first time in her career.
Williams was greeted with a standing ovation as she exited Centre Court, but the 44-year-old surprisingly then opted to skip her post-match media duties in what could be the final singles match of her illustrious career.
In a statement shortly after her defeat, Wimbledon said: 'Unfortunately Serena Williams will not be able to undertake media this evening.'
A brief set of quotes from Williams were instead provided, in which she expressed her gratitude for being able to return to Wimbledon and her appreciation for the atmosphere on Centre Court.
Despite her decision to skip the press conference, Williams could have potentially fallen foul of strict rules within the Grand Slam Rulebook, which require players to attend post-match media unless unable to appear on reasonable grounds.
The All England Club have opted not to fine Williams, deciding her decision was 'reasonable' and that she satisfied some obligations by providing a quote.
Williams will likely address the media in some capacity before her doubles match with Venus, which is scheduled to take place on Thursday against Solana Sierra and Camila Osorio.
Joint, on the other hand, will take on 29th seed Alexandra Eala in the second round after her historic victory over Williams.
