A brazen escape unfolded in Hamilton early Thursday, leaving police scrambling to recapture an 18-year-old man already in custody. Sultan Aldarwish, arrested on a warrant for previous shoplifting offenses and a new charge of failing to comply with a release order, managed to flee while still handcuffed.
The initial arrest occurred near Main Street East and Grant Avenue as officers were conducting another investigation. Details surrounding the escape remain scarce, with police offering no immediate explanation as to how Aldarwish broke free from their grasp despite being restrained.
A massive search was immediately launched, mobilizing numerous officers and a K9 Unit to scour the central Hamilton area. The last confirmed sighting placed Aldarwish near Barton Street East and Leeming Street, but he has remained elusive since.
Aldarwish is described as a young man of Middle Eastern descent, standing six-foot-one and weighing approximately 170 pounds. He has distinctive brown eyes, long, curly black hair, a small goatee, and a thin moustache.
At the time of his escape, Aldarwish was wearing a black Moose Knuckle jacket, black shorts, and black shoes. Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding his location to come forward.
The circumstances of the escape are raising questions about security protocols and the challenges faced by law enforcement in maintaining custody. The search continues as investigators work to bring Aldarwish back into custody.
