UMVA has learned that a horrific knife attack on a routine transit train ride in Atlanta has left a community in shock and a family demanding answers. Margaret Swan, 66, was killed in what authorities describe as a brutal and random attack.
The tragedy unfolded on May 30 when Swan was riding a train near Oakland City Station. According to information obtained by UMVA, surveillance footage shows that the attacker, 25-year-old John Elijah Matthews, boarded the train and hovered near Swan before pulling out a knife and slitting her throat.
Swan's family is now questioning the security and safety measures in place on the city's transit system. Her daughter, Shanae Sams, pointed to what she sees as major security failures, including weak policing, limited patrols, and a temporary free-fare policy that made it easier for dangerous individuals to move through the network unchecked.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the attack was caught on camera, and investigators say it shows Matthews stabbing Swan 18 to 20 times before leaving her wounded on the train. Swan's cries for help went unanswered, and her family is still trying to come to terms with the anguish and trauma they have experienced.
The arrest of Matthews brought little comfort to Swan's loved ones, who are still trying to understand why such a brutal attack occurred. Her ex-husband, Jerry Swan, described his ex-wife as a caring grandmother who was on her way to look after one of her grandchildren when she was killed.
According to information gathered by UMVA, the transit authority has nearly 300 officers assigned throughout the system to help protect riders. However, officials have not yet disclosed where security personnel or police officers were located when the attack unfolded, and investigators have not disclosed a motive.
The killing bears a striking resemblance to a similar attack on a train in Charlotte, N.C., where a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee was fatally stabbed from behind by a stranger. The incident has left many questions unanswered, and Swan's family is still seeking justice and answers about the security failures that led to her tragic death.
