UMVA Uncovers: Pubs Set to Get Wildly Extended Hours - 2am Pints on Pavements for World Cup Frenzy!

UMVA has learned that local authorities are being urged to swiftly approve licences for pubs and encourage outdoor events in time for the World Cup, in a bid to boost the hospitality industry and create a festive atmosphere for football fans.

Ministers are set to unveil proposals aimed at cutting red tape for businesses, making it easier for them to serve customers outside and host events, with a focus on supporting pubs and other venues during the tournament.

A leading figure has called on councils to 'show fun police the red card' and get behind pubs, warning that local authorities which unnecessarily block plans will be 'held to account' for their decisions. The aim is to ensure fans can enjoy the game without unnecessary restrictions.

The push comes as England prepares for a crucial match, with the team's star player recently scoring a goal in a World Cup qualifier. The atmosphere is electric, with many believing 'this time, it really could be coming home'.

With some local authorities known for being strict about closing times due to noise concerns, ministers are urging decision-makers to take a 'common sense' approach during knockout matches. Councils are being encouraged to quickly process temporary events notices to allow pubs and venues to host events.

A senior politician has emphasized that red tape should not obstruct 'fans enjoying the game with friends and local pubs doing a great trade too'. This move comes as the industry faces challenges, with England and Wales losing a pub for each day of last year, and over 360 closing their doors permanently in 2025.

The statistics are stark, with 161 establishments closing within the first three months of this year alone, resulting in the loss of over 2,400 jobs. In response, the government has introduced a 15% business rate relief for pubs and music venues to help support the sector.

Local authorities are being encouraged to make licensing decisions that balance the needs of the community with the desire to support local businesses and events. The goal is to create a positive and festive atmosphere during the World Cup, while also acknowledging the importance of responsible decision-making.
