UK Export Finance has signed a £750 million financing framework with GE Aerospace to direct airline engine repair work and associated supply chain spending to the manufacturer’s sites in Wales and Scotland.
The five-year Memorandum of Understanding makes government-backed financing available to qualifying airline customers for engine shop visits, the overhaul and maintenance of commercial aircraft engines.
The agreement was signed at the Farnborough International Airshow. It is the first framework of its kind for the export finance agency.

GE Aerospace employs more than 2,000 people across its Welsh and Scottish facilities. Local businesses providing machining, logistics, and support services are expected to gain from a sustained pipeline of funded overhaul work.
The framework addresses a persistent industry challenge: slow and inconsistent financing for engine maintenance. Airlines will receive upfront clarity on available funding and multi-year approvals, allowing planning around operational needs rather than lender timelines.
The arrangement marks a shift for the export finance agency, historically focused on guaranteeing large export contracts. The agency has pledged a fivefold increase in support for small and medium-sized enterprises.
Maintenance and repair are now treated as strategic export activity worthy of backing, not just original manufacturing. The deal reflects a broader repositioning of public finance toward regional industrial capacity.
GE Aerospace has committed £14.2 million to its Welsh facility over three years to upgrade infrastructure and maintain its role in global fleet support.
Aerospace sits at the centre of the government’s advanced manufacturing strategy, which targets competitiveness through engineering, research, and complex supply chains while supporting clean energy transition.
The framework signals that export finance is being routed directly into regional sites and their supply chains rather than concentrated in central government or financial institutions. If successful, the model may be extended to other industrial sectors.
