LANDLORDS CALL COPS ON TENANTS FACING EVICTION!

LANDLORDS CALL COPS ON TENANTS FACING EVICTION!

A quiet corner of Richmond is now the site of a growing crisis, as residents of a housing estate owned by the UK Poppy Factory face the threat of homelessness. These aren't veterans or those directly connected to the charity’s core mission; they are ordinary families, working individuals, and long-term tenants suddenly confronted with impossible financial demands.

The charity, renowned for its vital work supplying poppies for Remembrance Day, informed its private tenants that they must pay an additional £800 per month to remain in their homes. This demand arrived just before the implementation of the Renters’ Rights Act, designed to prevent such sudden and substantial rent increases.

Faced with this ultimatum, residents received “no-fault” eviction notices – Section 21 notices – effectively forcing them to leave. The looming Renters’ Rights Act offers little immediate relief, as it isn’t scheduled to take effect for another month, leaving families in a desperate situation.

Stephen Garford, a 64-year-old resident of 23 years, described a descent into despair. The prospect of leaving his community, his friends, has triggered debilitating anxiety, forcing him to seek medical help. “I wake every hour every night,” he confessed, “I have no appetite. The stress it has caused has affected me so much.”

Yesterday, residents, alongside representatives from Acorn Union, attempted to speak directly with Poppy Factory CEO Amanda Shepard. They sought answers, a reconsideration of the demands, and a glimmer of hope. But their plea was met with silence and a startling response: the police were called.

Despite staff being visible through windows, the charity refused to engage, even drawing the curtains to shut out the protestors. Police arrived at the scene, responding to the Poppy Factory’s call, and instructed the tenants to disperse.

Kane, from Acorn, condemned the charity’s actions as “morally reprehensible,” vowing to continue the fight. “They have refused to meet with these people as a group,” he stated, “But we aren’t going to give up.”

Tenants report having already agreed to yearly rent increases designed to bring properties up to market value. This latest demand feels like a betrayal, a cruel blow to those who have built their lives within the estate. One mother of a son, a resident for over a decade, broke down in tears upon receiving the notice.

Another tenant, already struggling with rising costs, faces an impossible choice. “It’s not like I am on minimum wage, I have a good job,” she explained, “but all of these sudden increases will make it hard for anyone to afford. I have two children, I cannot just easily afford all of this. It’s really unfair.”

The situation is particularly dire in the Royal Borough of Richmond, where council housing is scarce. With only around 300 social housing units available annually, finding affordable accommodation is a near-impossible task for those on average incomes.

A spokesperson for the Poppy Factory acknowledged the protest, stating that police were called to ensure the safety of all, including vulnerable production staff. They maintained that the rent reviews were “carefully considered and in line with local market rents” and that they remain open to individual meetings with tenants, with Acorn representatives present.
