US and Iran Halt Military Strikes, Pave Way for Diplomatic Talks in Qatar

US and Iran Halt Military Strikes, Pave Way for Diplomatic Talks in Qatar

The United States and Iran have reportedly agreed to meet in Qatar on Tuesday to resolve issues over the Strait of Hormuz.

A Trump administration official stated that the U.S. and Iran "will stand down for now" after exchanging attacks with each other near the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend.

U.S. officials stated that the two countries have agreed to meet on Tuesday in Qatar, although Iran's deputy foreign minister has denied this claim.

Meanwhile, the Israeli Defence Forces launched attacks on three Hezbollah command centres in southern Lebanon, claiming it was in response to ceasefire violations.

Israeli officials stated that these strikes came in response to the terror organization Hezbollah's continued targeting of their forces operating in the security zone.

The fighting between Israel and Hezbollah has threatened to throw off ongoing peace talks between Iran and the U.S.

On Friday, the U.S. announced a "framework" for future talks between Lebanon and Israel to seek an end to the fighting in Lebanon, which was later rejected by Hezbollah.

Early Monday, the Israeli Air Force struck overnight at alleged Hezbollah command centers in Nabatieh and Mayfadoun in southern Lebanon, according to the Israeli Defence Forces.

The Israeli Defence Forces also stated that troops struck and dismantled a launcher that Hezbollah continued using to attack them.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has claimed that half of Iran's frozen assets held in Qatar will be returned to Tehran.

Pezeshkian made the announcement during meetings with senior Iranian clerics in the city of Qom, stating that $6 billion out of a total of $12 billion in frozen assets will be returned to the country.

The memorandum of understanding between the U.S. and Iran agreed that Washington would make fully available for use the frozen or restricted funds and assets of the Islamic Republic of Iran upon the implementation of the agreement.

Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated that there are currently no plans to hold meetings with U.S. officials to form the "technical teams" in Qatar this week.

Gharibabadi stated that consultations with Qatar, including on following up on the implementation of the other party's commitments, are ongoing as usual, but there is no confirmation of technical talks between the working groups in Doha.

Several media outlets have reported that the U.S.-Iran talks are expected to take place in the Qatari capital, Doha, on Tuesday.
