Governor Sherrill framed the restriction as a vital step towards safeguarding residents. She expressed disbelief that such a law was even necessary, stating the nation “will not tolerate masked roving militias pretending to be well-trained law enforcement agents.”

Similar measures have been gaining traction elsewhere. Washington Governor Bob Ferguson recently enacted a law with comparable restrictions on ICE agents, signaling a growing national movement towards greater oversight.
However, the Department of Homeland Security has vehemently opposed these efforts, labeling the Washington state law “irresponsible, reckless and dangerous.” They’ve declared their intention to disregard the ban, citing constitutional concerns.
Governor Sherrill’s actions represent a direct challenge to the previous administration’s immigration policies. Earlier this year, she launched a platform for residents to document encounters with ICE agents, seeking greater transparency in their operations.
Sherrill voiced frustration over a lack of cooperation from ICE, detailing instances where agents failed to provide information about detentions, even involving American citizens and a five-year-old child. She emphasized the need for thorough documentation of all enforcement activities.
The governor recounted witnessing agents operating in masks and without proper insignia, effectively operating without accountability and eroding public safety. This observation fueled the urgency behind the new law.
The conflict extends beyond the mask restriction. The Trump administration is currently pursuing legal action against New Jersey over a separate executive order issued by Sherrill. This order prohibits federal immigration agents from making arrests on state property, including courthouses and correctional facilities, and prevents the use of state resources for immigration enforcement.
