Florida Republican House candidate Scott Singer has raised concerns about the political shift in New York City following recent Democratic primary victories by progressive candidates. Singer, former mayor of Boca Raton, argues that socialist influence within the Democratic Party is reshaping policies and driving businesses and residents away from New York.
Singer emphasized that the Democratic Party’s alignment with far-left priorities, including proposals to dismantle ICE, abolish prisons, and end private healthcare, reflects a dramatic ideological shift. He warned that this movement, once considered fringe, is now mainstream in key urban areas. “The Democratic Party in New York and increasingly across America is not the same party as in recent years,” he stated. “This radical influence is sending shockwaves that could redefine the nation’s political landscape.”
Recent primary elections highlighted the growing power of progressive factions within the Democratic Party. Three candidates backed by New York City’s mayor and a prominent progressive group ousted established rivals. A common theme among the winners was vocal opposition to Israel, particularly evident in the race between progressive advocate Brad Lander and incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman. Lander secured a decisive victory, reflecting shifting priorities within the party.
Singer linked these developments to rising tensions over antisemitism, citing recent incidents involving Rep. Dan Goldman. His office was vandalized, and he was reportedly denied service at a restaurant due to his Jewish identity. “If this occurs on city streets, it bears unsettling parallels to historical patterns,” Singer said. “We must recognize the direction the Democratic Party is taking.”
Political analysts suggest the moderate wing of the Democratic Party is struggling to counter the momentum of progressive candidates. Singer argued that this divide is forcing traditional centrists to reconsider party allegiance. “Democratic members of Congress rarely lose primaries,” he noted. “When they do, it’s to candidates advocating the end of prisons and ICE. This trajectory demands attention.”
Singer expressed concern about the broader implications of New York’s political trends. He cited reports from business leaders contemplating relocation from New York to Florida due to high taxes and policy uncertainty. With recent election results, he warned that the exodus could accelerate. “If progressive policies expand nationwide, we risk unrecognizing the country we once knew,” he said. His congressional campaign, he added, is driven by a desire to prevent such ideological shifts from destabilizing other states.
