A man who overstayed his U.S. visa by a decade after visiting Disney World has been arrested, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
Alejandro Saul Rico, an Argentine citizen, was taken into custody on June 19 in Silver Spring, Maryland, for overstaying his visa and for having a criminal history.
Rico was granted a B1 visa in 2006 to visit the U.S. for business purposes, but remained in the country long after his authorized stay had expired in 2016.
He has a conviction for assault and a prior arrest for a third-degree sex offense in Maryland, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
The Department of Homeland Security is cracking down on individuals who overstay their visas and abuse the system, officials said.
Absent of integrity in the visa program, some individuals may see it as a way to enter the country and exploit U.S. laws.
The Trump administration has enacted sweeping overhauls of the visa program to prioritize self-sufficiency and increased vetting of applicants.
The B1 visa is typically used by foreign visitors to conduct business, as opposed to the B2 visa, which is used for tourism purposes, according to official guidelines.
